Right pot dimensions

Right pot dimensions

How to determine the right pot dimensions ?

There is no single formula that determines the perfect pot dimensions for every bonsai. Traditional rules of proportion can be helpful, but they must be interpreted in relation to the tree's species, root base, trunk, crown, and style.

Length and width

A powerful upright tree often requires a pot with enough horizontal length to provide visual stability. A cascade tree, by contrast, may need a tall pot that balances its downward movement.

Forest plantings and raft-style bonsai typically require a greater horizontal area than compact, single-trunk trees.

Depth

The appropriate depth depends on both design and horticulture.

Shallow pots can emphasise refinement and maturity, but they must still provide sufficient space for the roots, water retention, drainage, and the tree's health.

Deep pots are especially important for cascade styles, where their proportions help balance the descending trunk. They may also be necessary for trees with large root systems or particular cultivation requirements.

Root base and trunk thickness

A broad, powerful root base usually needs a pot that can support its visual weight. A slender trunk may be more effective in a smaller, lighter-looking container.

The pot should not appear so small that the tree looks unstable, nor so large that the tree loses its visual importance.
